We're showing telegraph lines in the background as a reminder that synchronization was a big part of early 20th century tech. Not synchronizing computers, not a first, but syncing train schedules, telegraph offices, the D-Day invasion, and eventually the microsecond choreography in the first reactions of atomic weapons.

Synchronization both stumped and enabled much of the 20th century. And it's hardly a "solved" problem now. Look at Apple's struggles with Mobile Me.

I used to picture Einstein's work at the patent office as him just biding his time, as if he were a jazz player holding down a day job to keep the family happy. Now I know that most of the patents in his section were for the synchronization of electromechanical clocks. Reading all those sync plans in his quiet office: slowly drafting a theory of time.
