Filemaker as Email Archive DBase?

Hi All,
Just considering the idea of using a FM9 project to archive all the email that comes in through us (15 or so accounts, about 400 incoming 50-60 outgoing messages per day including the dreaded spam).
Probably not looking to use FM as the email app, but just to form a searchable archive, and therefore reduce the amount of online (web server / imap) and offline (laptops etc) mail storage that needs to be done.
Still haven't decided if a) we need to do this at all, or are just being 'pack-rats' about data and b) if FM is a good tool for the job, or would choke on the number of records too quickly.
Just looking for any general advice / experience to see if this is something we might want to do.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts...
Matt
