We are using FM6.

Looking for way to generate (even outside of FM) bar codes (128 and 3 of 9 mostly) which can be inserted on top of an inserted image.

Can you insert on top of an insert?

If the bar code is just a font, you can place the text (with a transparent background) over a container field holding your image. Stacking the two fields on top of each other like this should give you the effect you described.
