Is there a simple way to omit saturday and sunday in the grid view of the calendar?

Unfortunately, no. Since the date range and start date can be dynamic this would be quite tricky to accomplish. One thing I have seen folks do is add some conditional formatting to the content field to "gray it out" if it represents a day that falls on a Weekend. The days are still there, but you can spot them easily.

This is also tricky as you need to be working in layout mode ( so make sure you have a good back-up ), but certainly easier than omitting them entirely.
