I keep getting error -013 (Greeting/Authentication failed) when I attempt to send test emails from FileMaker 11. I ran SavvyData's SMTP Send Mail Interrogation file with two successful results and neither one seems to work when I try to translate it into Mail.it.

Successful setting results from interrogation:

Mail_FromName: [name]
Mail_FromEmail: [email
Mail_ReplyTo:
SMTP_Server: [mailhost]
SMTP_Port: 25
SMTP_SSL: OFF
SMTP_AuthType: None
SMTP_UserName: [username]
SMTP_Password: [pw]
-----------------------------
Mail_FromName: [name]
Mail_FromEmail: [email]
Mail_ReplyTo:
SMTP_Server: [mailhost]
SMTP_Port: 25
SMTP_SSL: OFF
SMTP_AuthType: Cram-MD5
SMTP_UserName: [username]
SMTP_Password: [pw]

Any ideas what to try next?

Thanks,

Mike

Hey Mike,

Make sure you're entering these settings in fmSpark's User's Tab, not on the Default Tab. The default settings are used for the creation of new users: mail is actually sent using the settings for the logged in user (Admin if you haven't changed anything), getting those settings from the User's Tab.

Hope that helps,

John

Hi John,

I verified the settings were for User, not Default, and retested without success. Any other ideas?

FWIW, I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with the network connection (I'm logged in over a VPN) since I received the two test emails the Interrogation file said it sent successfully.

You can test your settings in the sample file that came with that MailIt download link; it has a little more error reporting than fmSpark, but aside from that I think you have to keep tweaking settings until you get through.

Turns out this client's SMTP server was choking on the username/password. One of their IT guys had me try again leaving both blank and fmSpark/Mail.it worked, at long last. Why the Interrogator worked with a username/pw but Mail.it/fmSpark didn't who knows, I'm done for now.

Thanks for all your help,

Mike

Thanks for posting back Mike: I know this mail-settings stuff can be really frustrating-- lots of moving parts, not all under your control. Thanks again.

Hi John and Jason

I thought I post my experience here in case anybody else has the same problem.

We have emailed with fmSpark for the last 1.5 years without any problems with the individual user settings being set to our provider (iinet) user name AND password.

2 days ago it suddenly stopped working with the error code -013.
I checked everything and couldn't work out what is wrong, so came to the forum and found this post and the info that no password might work.
I then tried it without password and discovered that it works again.

So I have only got the provider user name in the settings, but no password and all is working fine again.

Thanks

Kind regards

Thanks Regine!

Right, both with the mail.it plug-in and native smtp in FileMaker we have pretty limited control and error capture with SMTP, so experimenting with the settings we do have is always a practical approach.

Cheers!
