We have a calendar synced to google cal. via zulu. should i be able to sync to my iphone (I believe I followed the instructions correctly) so our calendars show up as calendar option with the ablity to filter which calendar I look at?

Yes. The instructions for adding Google Calendars to your phone are here:

The calendars show up as a new "group" of calendars and you can choose which ones to look at or look at them all by selecting the "calendars" or "my calendars" button from the top left of the calendar ap in the phone.
