Hiding and locking the status area from users is a good idea. However, if you want them to be able to perform a find incorporating the 'Omit' checkbox to filter records etc. is there a way to do it without revealing the Status Area?

You can add buttons (or custom menus) to your solution that offer this option using the Omit Record / Request script step. (Don't know why FileMaker left this out of the "Requests" menu in find mode...)

What confused me is the name Filemaker gives to this script step, which is 'Omit Record' rather than 'Omit Record/Request' which would be similar to the way they describe the 'New record/request' script step.

Still, I'm easily confused.
